That's a meaningful gap for a beginner or anyone testing the category for the first time, and it buys real capability — the S30 Pro isn't a stripped-down entry model, it's ZWO's dual-camera mid-tier telescope.

Aperture and Optics

This is the actual axis the two models compete on. The S50 Pro's 50mm aperture gathers roughly 2.8 times the light of the S30 Pro's 30mm optic (aperture area scales with the square of the diameter), which translates to faster, cleaner stacks on faint targets and more resolved detail on smaller deep-sky objects. The trade-off is field of view: the S30 Pro's 4.6° telephoto frame fits large targets like the Orion Nebula without a mosaic, while the S50 Pro's narrower 2.8° frame will need mosaic mode for the same wide targets.

4.6° vs. 2.8° telephoto FOV is the clearest, most consequential spec difference between these two telescopes for framing decisions. Large emission nebulae, star-forming regions and the Andromeda Galaxy's full extent fit more easily in the S30 Pro's wider frame; the S50 Pro will resolve smaller, fainter deep-sky objects better but needs mosaic stitching more often for sprawling targets.

Portability

The S30 Pro's 1.65kg body and compact 210×140×80mm shape are built to disappear into a daypack. The S50 Pro's 2.8kg weight and taller 268mm folded length are a genuinely different proposition — closer to "grab a bag for this" than "toss it in with a jacket." On paper, the S50 Pro should outperform the S30 Pro on faint, small deep-sky targets — galaxies with real structure, tighter globular clusters, dimmer nebulae — purely on light-gathering. That's a reasonable expectation based on aperture physics, not yet a confirmed result: independent testing of the S50 Pro specifically on faint deep-sky targets is still limited to a handful of early sample images, not the kind of broad, repeated evidence ORIVON has for the S30 Pro.

Moon

Both apertures are more than adequate for the Moon — it's a bright, forgiving, high-contrast target for any smart telescope in this class. The S50 Pro's longer 260mm focal length will frame it larger and potentially show marginally more crater detail, but this isn't where either telescope's limitations show up.

Planets

Neither telescope is built for serious planetary detail. The S30 Pro's 160mm focal length already produces a small planetary disc; the S50 Pro's 260mm helps somewhat, but a roughly 1.6x longer focal length on a compact smart telescope is not the same as a dedicated long-focal-length planetary setup. Mosaics and Wide-Field Targets

The S30 Pro's wider native field of view means it needs mosaic mode less often for large targets. Independent pre-release coverage describes the S50 Pro supporting mosaic stitching up to 8K, which would help offset its narrower frame — but that specific figure comes from third-party analysis, not ZWO's own confirmed spec sheet, so treat it as reported rather than certain.

Galaxies

More aperture generally means more resolved structure on galaxies, which favors the S50 Pro in principle. The S30 Pro has a genuine track record here from independent reviewers capturing Andromeda with visible structure after extended exposure; the S50 Pro's equivalent track record doesn't exist yet in any meaningful volume.

Nebulae

For large emission nebulae that fit comfortably in a single frame, the S30 Pro's wider 4.6° field is arguably the more convenient tool despite its smaller aperture. Star Clusters

Open clusters suit the S30 Pro's wider frame well. Urban Observing

Both share the same built-in dual-band filter design aimed at emission nebulae under light-polluted skies.
